Dental Crowns and Bridges: Restoring Strength and Function to Your Smile

Whether a tooth has been weakened by a large filling, cracked under pressure, or lost altogether, crowns and bridges are two of the most reliable ways to restore both function and appearance. At Burlinson Dental Surgery, serving patients across the East Coast, Siglap, and Bayshore area, Dr Graeme Burlinson and Dr Jaime Chan regularly use these restorations to help patients keep chewing comfortably and smiling confidently.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over an existing tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. Crowns are typically recommended when a tooth:

– Has a large filling that no longer has enough natural structure to support it

– Is cracked or fractured

– Has undergone root canal treatment and needs protection from future fracture

– Is discoloured or misshapen in a way that a patient wishes to address

Modern crowns are usually made from ceramic or zirconia, materials chosen for their strength and their ability to closely match the natural translucency and colour of your teeth ΓÇö so the result blends in rather than standing out.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring a false tooth (or teeth) to the crowns placed on the adjacent natural teeth, effectively “bridging” the gap. A bridge is a fixed alternative to dentures or implants, and may be suitable when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns or when a patient prefers a solution that doesn’t involve removable appliances or surgery.

The Treatment Process

Getting a crown or bridge typically involves:

1. **Assessment and planning** ΓÇö including X-rays to check the health of the tooth and surrounding bone.

2. **Tooth preparation** ΓÇö reshaping the tooth (or teeth) to make room for the restoration.

3. **Impressions or digital scans** ΓÇö used to custom-fabricate your crown or bridge to fit precisely.

4. **A temporary restoration** ΓÇö worn while your permanent piece is being made.

5. **Fitting and cementing** ΓÇö once ready, your final crown or bridge is checked for fit and bite before being permanently secured.

Most cases require two visits, though some clinics ΓÇö including ours for select cases ΓÇö can offer same-day options depending on the complexity involved.

Caring for Your Crown or Bridge

With good oral hygiene, crowns and bridges can last well over a decade, often much longer. We recommend:

– Brushing twice daily and flossing (using floss threaders or interdental brushes for bridges, which help clean under the connecting section)

– Avoiding excessive force on the restoration, such as biting hard objects or ice

– Attending regular check-ups so we can monitor the fit and surrounding gum health

When to See Us

If you have a tooth that feels weak, chipped, or heavily filled ΓÇö or a gap from a missing tooth that’s affecting your bite or confidence ΓÇö it’s worth having it assessed sooner rather than later. Left untreated, these issues tend to worsen over time and can lead to more complex, costly treatment down the road.
